May 2011
On Friday Night, 13th May the Transition Year Annual Fashion Show took place. It was a wonderful success with the students stepping out with great confidence! They are very grateful to Ms. Claire Bradfield (Co-ordinator) and Ms. Johanna Sheehan for their support. In the weeks leading up to the show Ms. Karen Morrissey gave lessons in beauty and make-up and Ms. Joan Brennan helped with dress design. On the night many of the Staff helped out backstage. A great highlight was the bridal wear (with the girls rivalling Kate Middleton!) and the dress design section where they modelled their own creations. Tired but very happy with themselves they now look forward to the T.Y. trip to Spain and work experience followed by the Gaisce walk in Kerry.

TRANSITION YEAR TRIP TO THE CRIMINAL COURT, DUBLIN
On the 8th March St. Brigid’s College, Callan Transition Year Students travelled to Dublin to visit the Criminal Court. On arrival they went through a security check before entering. They gave up their cameras and put their bags through a sensor. It was a reminder of the sensitivity and security that surrounded the events there. They were then greeted by a barrister dressed in neat robes and a white collar. He took them to courtroom number 12 where he explained the layout and procedures of the courtroom. A mock-trial took place with all the students playing a part. They were then given a brief overview of a case that was to take place in courtroom number 6. Courtroom etiquette was explained e.g. bowing to the judge. After two hours the judge decided to proceed with the case the following morning and the students realised that the justice system can move slowly. On leaving the girls reclaimed their cameras. They agreed it was a highly educational experience to look on from the inside at what they usually only saw in snippets in the media.
February 2011
Dress Design workshops have begun in preparation for the much-anticipated Fashion Show later in the term. Ms. Joan Brennan is helping the students to create their own outfits to model on the night.
Dance Theatre of Ireland held a dance workshop where the girls participated in creating contemporary dance. They then gave a performance for the second-years who were very impressed.
The students attended a show in the Watergate Theatre. Psycho Spaghetti is a stand-up comedy show by Ger Carey. Its aim is to help young people understand the things that influence them and how laughter is the best medicine!
Afterwards, accompanied by Ms. Bradfield and Ms. Sheehan the girls had a tour of Nicholas Mosse pottery in Bennettsbridge. Met by Nicholas Mosse, the process of pottery-making was explained to them.
St. Brigid’s is one of three Kilkenny schools taking part in The Transition Year Photography Competition. It is a pilot scheme run by Kilkenny Photographic Society. Students can enter three images and have been attending photography workshops.
